11 Things We Learned About Our Online Marketing After Going Through the Alignment Website Performance Snapshot Report

1) We need to update our Privacy Policy.

When we first built our website, the Web Analytics World Conference was not as big of a deal as it is now.

We optimized for traffic generation through SEO and Content Marketing, but we completely ignored Social Media. Now that Social Media has become such an integral part of search engine optimization (SEO), there’s no question that our rankings would increase if we updated our privacy policy.

So even though changing our privacy policy feels like a lot of work and takes time that could be used for content creation, it’s something that needs to happen to grow our business online. Read more here: https://alignmentonline.com/free-online-performance-snapshot/

2) Our sitemap isn’t set up correctly.

You can’t have a website without one, but we’ve learned that it’s possible for your sitemap to not be set up correctly.

When we ran our report for the first time, there were some things about our site map that didn’t look quite right. For example, We had broken links and attachments with no description.

The good news is that the Alignment Online Marketing report gives you a breakdown of each page element, so we were able to identify these issues and fix them.

3) We’re not targeting all of our keywords correctly.

We have always focused on creating content that we know will rank well organically in Google’s SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages).

But after looking at some of the keywords that we’re not targeting and seeing how much potential traffic there is for them, it’s clear that we should spend more time optimizing our content to rank in those SERPs too.

4) Our website needs more internal links.

Internal linking happens when we link one page on our website to another.

The way we used to internal link was that, if someone clicked from a Blog Post to the Resources page, we would use the anchor text “resources”.

Giving content elements descriptive links is something that we’ve always suggested doing for SEO purposes, but it’s even more important now!

That’s because Google favors sites that have a lot of internal links!

5) Visitors spend only a few moments on each of our web pages.

It’s hard to understand how quickly users are jumping from page to page on our website, but it is clear that it isn’t taking them very long.

Now that we know this information, we’ll be able to better structure our content so that it’s appealing and easy to digest at a glance.

6) Users want more multimedia content.

It’s no surprise that people like to consume information in different ways, so we need to make sure that our site is accessible on multiple devices and includes multimedia elements.

The report specifically mentions the importance of having a video on your homepage, which was something that we were already doing.

That just goes to show that content that is appealing and relevant to users will also be appealing to search engines!

7) We have duplicate content.

The report pointed out that there were places on our website where we had duplicate content, which means Google didn’t know which version of the text was more important in each case.

Even though it’s not something that we created, it’s our responsibility to remove the duplicate content from the site.

Luckily, Google has some really helpful tools that can help us do this – and they’re free! Read more here: https://alignmentonline.com/free-online-performance-snapshot/

8) Our website needs updates.

Our report showed that our website is lacking in updates. This means that we’re not effectively updating content, which could be costing us serious search engine visibility and traffic.

It goes without saying that staying on top of your social media activity is really important for SEO purposes, but it needs to be carried out more often than once a month!

9) We need more citations.

We’re big fans of earning backlinks by creating content that is worthy of being linked to, but we also understand the importance of getting expert reviews and analyses from other people in your industry.

That’s why we’ve always made sure that our blog posts include links to relevant articles on other websites. The Alignment Website Performance Snapshot Report helped us realize that we need to be more deliberate about getting other websites to link to ours.

10) we’re using too many plugins.

We love what plugins can do for our web presence, but this report showed that we use a lot of them – and not all of them are doing much for our site’s SEO performance.

Now that we have this information, we can remove any plugins that are inactive or aren’t doing anything to enhance the user experience of our website. More on how to optimize your plugin usage here: https://alignmentonline.com/wordpress-plugins-usage-guide/

11) There is too much code for search engines to read.

The Alignment Website Performance Snapshot Report showed us that we have a lot of code on our website. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but over time too much code can hurt your website’s performance with Google and other search engines!

Luckily, we have some great free resources that can help us clean up our code and make it more scalable.
